!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

EA continues to make itself more and more hated among the gaming community.

Would you pay $40 for this come November?

For those who are video blocked at work (or don’t want to watch) there doesn’t seem to be much of a noticeable difference between remastered and old on the PC, at least on my small screen. For the out going consoles it does seem like it will get a more noticeable bump but still suffer in a fight between resolution and frames per second.

There’s tweaks to the lighting, textures, and anti aliasing and that really seems about it. PC can run it at 4k/60fps. The consoles are as follows: PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X can run the remaster at 4K/30 FPS or 1080p/60 FPS. The mainstream PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will run the game at 1080p/30 FPS.

I haven’t bought any NFS since Rivals (2013) on PS3 but the original 1998 (NFS III) Hot Pursuit was one of the first games I had in the gaming library. Seeing EA doing something like above is depressing. I want to blame the volatile next gen console switch now nailed down for next month but I’m not sure it can be made a valid excuse. Normally [as with Rivals] they opted with a new game to span the generation change.

Kinja'd!!!

EA remastered Burnout Paradise, 2 years ago. However, that was a game people would actually back and potentially buy as many lamented the demise of the Burnout series as Criterion Games worked bits into NFS. The Burnout series was always that Fast and Furious type of entertainment where each successor got more outlandish. NFS though has continued on it s juggernaut way.

I’m not sure how many people asked for a Remaster of a Reboot. It’s not a bad game per say, it just seems like something that doesn’t lend itself well to a remaster. It suffers from a car roster that’s a decade out of date, which I personally find to be the stale period between new and classic. This is something Burnout with its fictitious cars don’t suffer from. Perhaps it depends on what system you have and if you’re itching for a graphics update over similarly old Rivals. For the majority of the series followers I’d say this was a step into negligent territory for the series.

End Rant.

Out Nov. 6 on PS4, Xbox, and PC. Nov. 13 on Nintendo Switch

Pretty weird eh. Gaming industry is getting so fucked up.

I didn’t play Paradise but still intend to some day, I guess this means I may purchase the remaster rather than picking up an old cheap copy of the original. I think a lot of these strategies are just trying to make more money off old games.

Between these remasters, DLC getting turned off for old-ish Forza games, digital delivery where they can make a game unavailable whenever they want - it’s all about destroying the used game market so they can continually profit off people’s desire for less-than-new games rather than losing that market .

I might make a post about Forza BTW. It’s not even that old, but the game is neutered to shit. All the DLC cars are unavailable - some series, every car you can use is DLC except for 1 and 2. And they are actually in the game - you’re racing against these cars that you aren’t allowed to buy. They chose to break the game, to spite people into buying the latest one instead.

I think you’re giving them too much credit. I’ve never heard of a game having to disable or make unavailable cars due to license expiry.

Cars like the 240Z. I t’s available in Forza 6 and 7 - ie. it’s still licensed. And it’s decades old - not like Porsche who are picky about their license, every game has the 240Z. Also a s I said, the car is still in the game , you still race against it ie. it’s definitely still licensed .

The only thing you can’t do is “get the DLC” to actually drive it in game. Even though you don’t need to DownLoad the Content since obviously my machine already has the content, it’s just not letting me use it .

It’s maddening. It’s a scam!

Its funny because everyone else seems to have the remastered idea figure out. THPS1+2 was fucking incredible. Mafia the Definitive Edition was great because it was not just a graphics update, but it kept the core story. 2 recent ones that have knocked it out of the park...then EA tries to hop on the cash train and trips on the tracks. Oh, the PC remastered is on the left and the PC original is right (or centre if the console version is also shown which goes right).

I can tell you on my 13" computer it’s difficult to distinguish at 1440p between the PC versions. There’s some changes to the lighting (looks a bit like reduced contrast and greater exposure to use camera terms), some noticeable texture improvements and anti- aliasing (less jagged edges ) . It’s more noticeable over the console version.

Judging by the reaction thus far: On t he PC it’s really not enough if you’ve already played it and if you haven’t then the $10 key for it or Rivals is still better value . T he console players as well don’t seem to give a toss at playing a 2010 car roster with updated graphics.

I was surprised to find last month they hadn’t developed something for next gen launch. I think reviews have been good for WRC 9, I haven’t played it though. Haven’t gamed much for the past 10 years.

It really looks dire for next gen launches with only Dirt 5 as the only racing game. Forza Horizon 4, WRC 9 and GTA 5 slightly later. Who knows when Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo 7 drop.

I won’t buy a next gen for another year if not 2 until the library builds , at least my G29 is to be compatible with PS5.

I enjoyed quite a few songs on it too. Admittedly Alt and Punk Rock isn’t normally what listen to but they were catchy .

My whole music taste was developed from racing games from ‘98-05 and more mainstream rock radio. I started with a lot of Industrial from Test Drive 5 and Gran Turismo [Cubanate] and electronic from NFS III and PU [Rom Di Prisco]. Switched to Xbrick and I couldn’t believe the licensed and customiz able song library from Project Gotham 2. Junkie XL doing the whole Forza 1. The variety in NFS HP2 and Underground 2. And of course Burnout 3 in that period.

I still listen to songs from those games. They are o n my old various iThings for the car and helmet com .

This actually was quite a fun game. The core mechanics were so solid — drifting, item usage (turbo!), cop combat — that it lent itself a lot of replay value despite being technically “repetitive.” The soundtrack was also one of the last good racing game soundtracks.

The car roster is “dated,” but in my case it’s from my prime nostalgia years of car love. I still am obsessed but not quite as enamored as I once was, and a lot of these cars mean a lot to me.

Th e autolog stuff was actually great! I remember feeling the need to beat times from my friends. Race times are something so innate that you don’t even feel the whole gimmick pressuring you into using it.

It was pretty for its time, both graphically and design-wise. I’d love a chance to play it again and I’ll definitely be dropping my money on it.

Nosta lgia? Yes. But it was also one of the last good NFS games, and felt like the most natural mix between NFS and Burnout.

It is much more likely they couldn’t get the licenses for all those cars renewed.

More like they didn’t want to . Even Rockstar Games is guilty as they have started removing music from GTA IV. Their licenses for said music expired and of course they didn’t want to spend a dime on supporting a game they’re no longer making big bucks on.

If GTA Online ever stops being the cash cow it currently is, GTA V will suffer a similar fate when GTA V’s crazy large music library starts expiring.

Beloved franchises like GTA and NFS have become unapologetic cash grabs for their respective developers and it’s becoming awfully rare to see an actually original idea from anything other than an indy dev. Maybe I’m getting jaded.

At least PC gaming is alive and well for me thanks to modding. :D

Why would any developer spend more money for expired licenses on a game that is no longer being supported!?

You all act like this some conspiracy and it just isn’t. It’s just business. Games are always online now. We are never going back to the heady days of Gran Turismo where everything in the game is always there because it’s stored on a disc and never connected to the internet.

Do I like that people who aren’t playing the newest title lose access to game content? No. I think it sucks. And I would rather they make a end-of-life DLC like they did with Forza 5 where you could buy all the cars for like $5 if you wanted them.  But that is up to the devs AND the parties that hold the IP, and at some point it is no longer cost effective to try to support old games if the IP rights are too expensive.

You know I’m for the most part agreeing with you, right? I was just correcting you that it’s not that they “couldn’t” get licenses as you said, but they just do n’t want to. As you say, why spend money on a game they are no longer supporting.

Indeed, it’s just how the business of video games is nowadays. With always online digital media the developers and IP holders have more control over what happens when a piece of media gets old.

I don’t think you’re jaded. Myself was from ‘98-05 and late ‘09-10 after I got laid off.

I think back and feel like I got to play through certain renaissances in gaming. Just looking at ‘98 NFS III to NFS U ‘03. The differences in content and graphics is staggering between the two in the space of 5 years. Then wiring up the consoles and having online came about so we didn’t have to split screen our TVs or haul another TV to LAN and play with friends, well you didn’t even have to play with your friends. Gaming went from this nerdy hobby to a thing the cool dudes did.

I feel sort of old saying all this but it was really revolutionary stuff to the end user. Today it just seems more evolutionary. And learning of above, it’s barely even that anymore.

Man, I can’t remember the last time I actually gave a shit about an NFS game.

I started with the series with the original... well, the original Special Edition. TNFSSE. The first one on Windows I believe. The original original was on DOS and a couple different defunct consoles (3DO anyone? No?).

That was 1996...

That game was pretty great. Kind of like how Forza became. Semi-realistic, but approachable physics. They had car showcases that gave you all the stats and a small backstory and a fun real life music video of Road & Track crew flogging the shit out of the cars, which was pretty fancy for the mid 90s. Videos on computers at all were still a bit of a novelty at that point.

No modifications could be done to the cars. They were supposed to be a semi-realistic approximation of what they’re like to drive in real life. Only the open segment/point to point tracks that were supposed to be public roads had police... in Fox Body Mustangs.

NFS2 was still pretty similar, semi-realistic but approachable, had the car showcases still but no police. Then as you get to NFS3, it went full arcade physics , but with the heavy focus on the Hot Pursuit/police action. And, you could be the police yourself. That aspect was pretty novel and fun at the time. There was a whole online community that came together and even started making their own custom cars you could add to the game, download them from various websites. I was so into the games at that point that I was helping run NFSCheats as a teenager in the late ‘90s.

I never got into ‘High Stakes’ so much. But really liked them coming back to some realism and customization with Porsche Unleashed along with EA’s online racing servers at the time . I lost interest when they started doing storylines with the following NFS games. I was there for the cars and actual racing, not for Fast n Furious wannabe storylines. And they skewed back towards arcade with the games that followed NFSPU.

I did Motor City Online for their beta along with pretty much the entire time they were live with the retail game, all the way to the last day when they shut it down. It was the same basic team that was doing the NFS games.

One thing I came to appreciate that doesn’t get a whole lot of attention is the fact that EA used to employ their own musicians to create game music, including for those first several NFS games. Once they switched to whatever was after Hot Pursuit II, that went away in favor of commercial music, taking away one of the unique things I appreciated about those old games.

So, as I lost interest in NFS, I got more into more realistic and difficult games. A couple F1 sims like F1 2002 (when EA was doing F1 sims!) that a group of people made a whole GT-racing series mod for that eventually became its own game. I got into that game as well. Did some Grand Prix Legends, which some people redid some of the graphics on the cars to modernize it a bit, made some custom tracks for as well and had a healthy online racing presence for years. Those were some of the most difficult to drive cars!

I eventually broke down and got an XBox 360 so I could play Forza III and later IV. That’s pretty much where I stopped buying games altogether. I still occasionally boot up FM4 for the hell of it, but it’s rare. What I like a lot about FM4 is it’s almost what NFS originally was, just with way more cars and featuring real world tracks. Reasonably realistic physics, but maybe not quite full hardcore sim. It’s a little more approachable. They have car showcases and even got Clarkson to do some voiceovers on a few of the expanded showcases they did. Super easy to just pick up and do a quick race whenever you can for us casual gamers who don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to it... because life. But, FM4 in particular really is what NFS could have evolved into if EA kept to their original formula with TNFS/SE and NFS2/SE and kept expanding on that rather than going full arcade, police pursuit and storylines... though the police pursuit part can be pretty fun.

The PlayStation version of NFS III you could actually switch the style between arcade and simulator and it was really noticeable in game play. Arcade you could brake and handbrake drift all the corners and the cars were much faster. With sim the handbrake would 180 your car if you held it over a 1/4 second turning. Some cars had changeable ABS too to help with braking while turning.

I actually had both the PC and PS versions of NFS III and the PS was stupidly difficult in Hot Pursuit mode because the cops had cars that were basically god mode. The hard setting they’d bust you 50mph or below from 100ft fwd or back. They were like 2x as heavy as your car and much quicker. Touching them would cause you to loose traction so you really couldn’t pit them , if they were with you at the hairpins (especially at summit) you’d end up touching them and sliding into the barrier for a bust or simply going too slow trying to avoid them. The only options to deal with them were a ‘jesus take the wheel’ to try and wipe them out on traffic or scenery (more often you’d also wipe out) or find a way to build up enough momentum with perfect lines and avoid touching them.

You’d likely appreciate Mellow Sonic then! He’s up to 27 remixes from th e earlier NFS compositions (mostly 3, 4 and PU) :

I think the one they need to remaster would be high stakes. They just dont includes that type of game play anymore. Or better yet give me underground I'd play the shit out of that.

A remaster of an already “Meh” game. I have tried most of the newer NFS titles but they never really captured the feel of something like the original Most Wanted. That one remains the best semi-modern one for me.

I did play the original classic NFS games as well, I just would not want to nowadays, while I could probably play the original NFS Most Wanted again without hurting my eyes on the blocky graphics .

The series I miss the most and for me has been the high note of arcade/semi-arcade racing is Project Gotham Racing. Oh, the hours spent in PGR3 and 4 ...

I loved Project Gotham 2. PGR was an amazing series. How the driving was essentially scored in real time. You didn’t just have to win the race, you could do it with style and kick the points up to show domination! It was simple enough to pick up but it still rewarded players that put time in . I know the cone challenges in 1 and 2 pissed more than a few casuals off.

That’s fair enough. I think all of us have our own eras of favourite games from the series. M any of us want to dip back even further for our own selfish reasons ...

Thanks for the comment. :)

In my original draft I was going to mention maybe II, III:HP and IV:HS and HP2 circuit racing mashed together and heavily updated. Same with Underground 1 and 2 with more cars, especially from the 90's and JDM (now that JDM imports are a thing).

Thanks for the comment!

Burnout 3 did that a lot too (especially the faster car classes) . T here was a setting to turn it off in Burnout though.

I wish they remade Most Wanted (the original). Its old enough that updating the textures and props will liven it up a lot. Improve the physics a little bit, IIRC the cars had no “weight”...a bit more Forza Horzion ish I’m thinking. Also fix the glitchy cops, there were some dumb tricks to l ose them. Ooh and please dont add the tap to drift shit

I think the majority of seasoned NFS players think Most Wanted 2005 was the Magnum Opus and it’s been lacklustre since . It’s tough because a lot of people like Underground 1 and 2 and that sort of ties into to NFS and console racing games going more mainstream. I mostly see people clamouring for those 3 games in particular to come back.

TBH, Carbon was an improved MW...I liked the MW map better tho

Oooh and the canyon drifting was sublime! So much fun!!

I remember me and a friend used to trade highest scores for over an year...I think we started with the Viper and then switched to the C6Z06, good memories!

A reason I have heard as to why they haven’t remastere d, or even sell a digital download of , any of the old NFS title is because they can’t. T hat the have somehow lost the files that they use to make the game in the first place and therefore cannot edit the game files without remaking the game.
However according to a former EA employee I know, he thinks is more likely because all the files are just to old to try and port to new systems and that it would be easier for EA to just make a new game with the same map and “story” using the latest engine.

I’ m still waiting and wishing for NFS High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed, Hot Pursuit (1 and 2), MW, Carbon, and Pro Street. B ut I dont expect to see any of these titles remade/remastere d anytime soon.

Foolish me for thinking in this day and age of being able to pull off a proper Tony Hawk remaster that EA was going to put some effort in to reviving one of the PS1 or PS2 Hot Pursuit titles. EA’s racing franchises have felt phoned-in for years, so I guess this is nothing new.

After Criterion took over the NFS they have been crap. Ghost does make an ok racer I guess, but like so many others have said if you want to do a remake why not go back to the golden days of the series? Hot Pursuit 3, Underground, Most Wanted, or Carbon. Get a clue EA

Not the first time I’ve seen this mentioned. I find it would be really strange though, like somehow you ‘accidentally’ recycled your work computer or hard-drive. One would think they’d have some sort of backup for the source codes, even the old ones ?

I think you’re right with the last part though. They would have to work at bringing them back and EA really seems to have shed that this year (though Covid I suppose also plays into it). I’d say the industry has hit a wall of evolution rather than the revolutions in the period of ‘97 -07.
